Surreal. That is how it felt to marry the man I love with our family surrounding us on the cliff edge of this island. Our lives have been blessed with many joyful things but have also not been without heartache, loss or pain so when we connected at the right moment in time and found the same spirit and heart in each other, we decided to hold onto that for dear life. As we stood there under a dusting of raindrops it felt like all of heaven rejoiced with us as we committed our lives to each other. I’m so happy to finally share images of our special day that Perry Vaile lovingly captured for us. We’re also honored that Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine chose to feature our small celebration in Martha Stewart Real Weddings and Honeymoons Spring 2018 edition. Also see the online feature here MarthaStewartWeddings.com. I was blown away by all my talented vendor friends who created such a gift for us to remember, and especially thankful to Bliss in Bloom for bringing my vision to life.
I’d always dreamed of getting married where the land meets water and sky. As my wedding planner, Allison describes it “There is no more quintessential representation of the Big Island of Hawaii than Waipio Valley. There are layers upon layers to discover in this magical place…the genuinely rich Hawaiian history that resides there even to this day, the wildness of the place…plants…wild horses…wild waterfalls, the imposing, rocky cliffs, the fine black sand beach, the lush greenery…it is all mysterious and deep and powerful…the perfect place to start a life together forever!”
“We used some key words while working through our design process…bohemian yet classic, wild yet refined and genuine to the core…just like our couple. Each of the elements were carefully chosen so that they would feature the natural beauty that was surrounding us…
“At the Ceremony we didn’t want to disrupt the stunning vista and chose natural wild grasses and greenery that as the wind blew added gorgeous movement behind the Couple. The Bridal Bouquet was free form, wild and a true statement piece. The event was larger than life…grand…just like our surroundings. It was a unique decision to bring in a mix of furniture and rugs (much of it from our own living rooms!) for guest seating at the ceremony and the Cocktail Reception…
“At the Wedding Reception, we layered the table with rich metal tones, romantic fabrics and beautiful deep color. The blues are of course a nod to our incredible ocean. The dark and moodier colors in the china, glassware and votives, represent the depth and mystery of the Valley. We are fortunate on our Island to be surrounded by the abundance of the land. We were able to incorporate so many gorgeous local fruits into our tablescape – figs as the place card holders, stunning red Mountain Apples from up Mauka, lychee from the property’s orchard plus nuts, berries and mangos added unexpected texture and incredible depth and color to our table. All of the fruits and flowers represented the abundance of love and the fruitful harvest and sweetness of a life well lived and well loved by one another, surrounded by family and close friends.” – Allison Bennett, Bliss in Bloom
Andrew Abajian did a remarkable job capturing our story on his camera and Super8 film.
We are forever grateful to our families for the love they have poured into us and to our Savior Jesus who redeems. May our lives be a hymn to His glory!
